Having spotted an area that was underused, StBartholomew’s Primary School got in touch with A&S Landscape to add some suitable shelter.

A spot right between two buildings, this site gave us a real opportunity because by simply adding a canopy we created a strong and accessible outdoor space that was unavailable before, utilising the protection of the two buildings to manufacture an outdoor room, sheltered from the weather.

To do this we added a Motiva Mono curved roof canopy at a size of 8400mm x 5450mm to slot neatly between the two buildings.

How can learning outside help children with their academic performance and how can schools facilitate this?

Classrooms have long been the setting of choice for the majority of schools, but the upsides of outdoor learning are rapidly being recognised. You might think that it’s not viable, especially with the irregular British weather, but with a shelter, teaching outdoors can become a reality. With various configurations available for different purposes, any school can install a canopy to change any outdoor space into a new kind of classroom.

For children, new environments can enliven and excite, triggering an increased capableness to learn new information. At a young age, conventional classrooms can provide meagre stimulation for pupils and educational growth can become stagnant. By exploring the use of outdoor teaching, children can find fresh and refreshing ways of learning. Fresh air, and the capacity to teach in a considerably larger space, can open up new doors to the technique that lessons are taught and the tasks which can be performed.

Finished in a brown (RAL 8007) steelwork, we also added matching Alu-Tuff™ box profile guttering in Dura-Coat™ paint along with opal polycarbonate roofing, giving a partially opaque look.

If you’re looking to add a shelter to your campus then with a little scouting around you may find there are some very smart places to put it. By using the walls that are already in place you can create some protection from the elements on several sides at once meaning your canopy becomes a room instantly.
