What was the project brief?

Fabric shelter we manufactured for South Gloucester CollegeSouth Gloucestershire and Stroud College wanted to add a shade sail to their facilities in order to create a covered waterproof space outside their canteen. The staff wanted the canopy to provide shade from the sun and protection from the elements, have a bright design to bring more colour to the space, and sport post pads as a precaution to keep students with learning difficulties safe. The college got in touch with A&S Landscape and they were pleased to hear that we don’t believe in cutting corners, unlike other companies they had approached.

What was our shade sail solution?

A&S Landscape endeavoured to give South Gloucestershire and Stroud College the best advice for their situation, and they decided that a Maxima Sail™ would best fit their needs. We installed an 8000mm X 5000mm custom canopy structure comprising of two rectangular sails on six uprights, which offered space for benches to be installed beneath for sitting outside of the canteen. The Maxima Sail™ was a fantastic choice of model because it comes in a range of colourful fabrics – the college chose a waterproof green roof along with Gentian Blue steelwork to ensure that anyone enjoying time outside would be shielded from the rain and sun. Along with yellow post pads to provide extra protection for young people with learning difficulties, the design added a pop of colour to the new outdoor area. Plus, the eye-catching look of the shade sail created somewhere inviting for students, staff and visitors to spend time.

What was the result of the shelter?

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College think that the shade sail structure is an invaluable asset; the unique fabric canopy has brought something special to the area outside of their canteen and now everyone can enjoy eating and socialising outdoors in all weathers. The shelter could be used for other purposes as well, such as an outdoor classroom. A&S Landscape was happy that they had been able to offer the college guidance and a product that met their requirements and high standards.

About the client

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College is a college of further education and higher education. It is made up of four main campuses and other venues located in and around South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Stroud, and it caters for approximately 15,500 students each year. People of all ages can choose from a range of vocational and academic courses – including media, sport and engineering – and the college has a strong partnership with the University of Gloucestershire. On its website, its ethos is described as wanting to ‘provide an essential service for our communities and act with honesty, respect, responsibility and care.’ A&S Landscape found the staff to be pleasant to work with and hopes that they and all their students will make many happy memories in their new outdoor space.

Several of the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College venues are based in or near Bristol. This bustling city is known for both its historic attractions – such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge – and their modern counterparts. Local people and visitors can take a street art tour to discover some of Banksy’s best-known works, discover 12 acres of award-winning natural beauty combined with over 400 different animal species at Bristol Zoo Gardens, and get creative and scientific with the exhibits at We The Curious.

How can colleges make use of canopies?

Grey canopy we designed for John Taylor High SchoolShelters can be used in many ways by institutes of further education, depending on the needs of the college and its students. They often have large grounds where youngsters and guests can relax, and canopies can help colleges to get the most out of them year-round, by offering shelter from sun and rain. Setting up a dining canopy can increase facilities so more students can use them and experience the mental health benefits of eating outside. Also, an entrance shelter can transform the way in to a building and lift the architecture to impress prospective staff and students. Colleges can even add cycle stores to keep everyone’s bikes safe and dry and encourage green travel to their campuses.

Whether they want to improve dining facilities or the look of their outdoor areas, it’s clear that canopies can have huge benefits for colleges and similar institutions.
