School Walkway at Sycamore Academy, Nottingham

Sycamore Academy in Nottingham is a school where standards and expectations are very high. They take great pride in all they do. They needed to add some shelter on-site to a space between two school buildings. The sheltered area would offer protection to people as they moved around school.

A&S Landscape was delighted to discuss the canopy options available. Our Motiva range of canopies are steel and polycarbonate and they come in a number of different designs; straight roof, curved roof and cantilever. The canopy chosen was a Motiva Linear monopitch at 9300mm x 4500mm. This included aluminium gutters and downpipes which will manage the rainwater effectively.

The canopy has Marine Blue (RAL 5002) steelwork and clear polycarbonate roofing. It also has post pads for added safety. The children, staff and visitors at Sycamore Academy are no longer exposed to the elements as they move around school. Whether shade from the sunshine or shelter from the rain, the canopy is doing its job and looking very smart at the same time.

Why schools are using canopies to expand their provisions during a period of rising intake numbers

As we know, the school-age population has been rising. The amount of five to ten year old pupils in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) between 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the responsibility to create the 420,000 new school places that are required between 2016 and 2021 and there are many ways that this can be completed. New schools are being created, free schools are being funded and current schools are being given capital funding to uphold, enhance and extend facilities. With capital being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build new classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a great deal of different uses.
