School Shade Sail at Pontprennau Primary School Cardiff

Pontrennau Primary School is a brand new primary school. Part of the design of the school was to consider the outside spaces. School canopies are popular for a number of reasons, but particularly in primary settings where children want to be outdoors regardless of the weather.

A circular space in the flooring was added so Pontrennau already had a designated area to cover. All they needed to do was decide how to add shade and shelter.

A&S Landscape has more than 40 years’ experience in the industry and was more than happy to come and discuss the options available.

A fabric Shade Sail from our Maxima range was decided to be the best option. There are more than 50 colours and types of fabric, but we selected the waterproof fabric so that this Shade Sail offered protection from the elements all year round.

Year-round quality outdoor play and its impact upon social and emotional development

A common but under-researched area of social and emotional development in children is understanding the benefits of spending time outdoors and how considerable the effects are. For such an essential aspect of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat astounding. Not least because, the research that currently exists establishes that there is obvious evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a sizable positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These developing studies come from several disciplines using a extensive range of methods that all lead to the same notion.

The children at Pontprennau Primary School now have a shaded area outside the classroom formed by a 5000mm X 5000mm Maxima tensile waterproof fabric sail in bright Buttercup yellow. The area can be used flexibly by pupils, offering an additional learning and play space whatever the weather.

We also installed a shade sail at Hasland Junior School. Please see our product gallery for more images of similar projects for schools.
