What was the project brief?

Ryde Academy in Ryde on the Isle of Wight wanted to find two outdoor canopies – one to create a courtyard and dining area and one to stand adjacent to the sports pitches – to increase their covered facilities outside. Value for money, high-quality and efficient products, and attractive designs were all important aspects to the staff. A&S Landscape was pleased to be contacted and soon got to work on figuring out the right approach for this school.

What was our canopy solution?

After talking with A&S Landscape about the various models that would fit the brief, Ryde Academy chose a Motiva Mono™ for their courtyard and dining shelter. It appealed to them because of its contemporary asymmetric curved roof and how it could be installed right next to the school building for easy access at break times. Glazed panels were added to part of the front and one end, providing extra protection for anyone socialising or eating beneath it during wet weather.

For the canopy next to the sports pitches, Ryde Academy decided that the Motiva Duo™ would be the best model for the job. Built to measure 10,000mm X 10,000mm and also coming with handy glazed panels, it offered plenty of space for multiple uses like a games or outdoor classroom shelter. The curved roof was also an eye-catching addition that brought more interest to the space. Both canopies sported Signal Yellow steelwork and Opal roofs built from durable materials that would look fantastic and last for years to come, as well as allow the children to spend more time in the fresh air, no matter the season.

What was the result of the new shelters?

Students and staff alike at Ryde Academy love the outdoor canopies. They have greatly improved the school’s undercover facilities at a cost that worked with their budget, without compromising on quality. Children can now spend lunchtimes eating under the dining shelter, which has reduced pressure on indoor facilities, and use the sports pitch shelter in all sorts of weather. The canopies look bright and colourful with their matching designs and they offer many opportunities to boost the students’ wellbeing. We thought that the school’s reception of the shelters was a fantastic result for this project, and one we proudly added to our portfolio.

About the client

Ryde Academy is an academy status secondary school, including a sixth form, which was judged to be ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2016. It wants each and every child to choose a remarkable life and believes that all students should receive an outstanding education. The staff achieve this by applying the school’s values – which include being unusually brave, discovering what’s possible and pushing the limits – to everything they do. A&S Landscape was impressed by Ryde Academy’s creativity and dedication to its students and hopes that the new shelters help to improve daily life at the school for everyone in its community.

This client is based in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The town is known for its impressive stretches of sandy beach, great eateries, Victorian architecture and traditional seaside attractions. Also, its shopping scene is incredibly diverse and features specialist shops selling comics, vintage clothing and skateboards!

Why should you think about installing multiple canopies?

Some organisations may think that they can only afford a single shelter, but our products offer fantastic value for money to suit any budget. This means that you can add multiple canopies to your grounds without spending a fortune! One advantage of this is finding solutions to different problems. For example, you could buy a covered walkway to allow your staff to move more easily between your buildings in undesirable weather, as well as an entrance shelter to revitalise the way in to your premises and impress your visitors. You could install two or more models with matching designs to increase visual appeal and cohesion across your site, which can have the added effect of reflecting your brand and values in the steelwork and roof colours.
