What was the project brief?

Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer wanted an outdoor dining canopy to reduce pressure on its indoor facilities. They thought it should provide students with a new space where they could enjoy the fresh air while eating and taking time away from their classes, as well as have a sleek, modern design that appealed to everyone at the school. The staff contacted us here at A&S Landscape to design, manufacture and install their shelter and we were delighted to do so.

What was our dining canopy solution?

After taking a look at our product range and hearing our expertise, Lacon Childe School decided to add a Motiva Duo™ to its grounds. Thanks to a solid steel framework and a duopitch curved roof made of genuine polycarbonate, this model is ideal for dining shelters and offers excellent protection in all types of weather. The Slate Grey steelwork and Opal roof gave the canopy a contemporary feel that blended in with the architecture. The extensive 16000mm X 8000mm measurements also created enough space for many students to dine outside together. This would have benefits for the workings at the school because it would reduce queues and alleviate crowding in other facilities. Plus, it would surely have benefits for the children’s wellbeing as they could get outdoors more often during their breaks.

What was the result of the shelter?

The new canopy has been really well-received; the staff and students think it looks modern and inviting and they love spending breaks beneath it eating and socialising. Lunchtimes are now not so stressful at Lacon Childe School, thanks to the multiple dining areas they can now make use of. The canopy could even be used as an outdoor classroom shelter to mix up lesson plans and encourage everyone to enjoy more time outside. We hope that our product continues to help make school life easier for this client in the future.

About the client

Lacon Childe School is based in Cleobury Mortimer, a town in southeast Shropshire. Located between the Clee Hills and the Wyre Forest, it’s home to fantastic views of the county and stunning walks like the Mortimer Trail and the Severn Way. Cleobury Mortimer boasts many wonderful pubs where local people enjoy relaxing, a traditional ironmongers, and even the ‘highest bakery in Shropshire’! You can also easily reach attractions like the West Midlands Safari Park and the Severn Valley Railway from the town, making it a great place for families.

The school itself caters for 11 to 16-year-olds in Shropshire and neighbouring Worcestershire. It says on its website that ‘students at Lacon Childe are encouraged to excel in all areas of school life; academically, socially and personally’. It has a long history of helping children to become well-rounded young adults, as it was established back in 1735. We were impressed by the staff’s forward thinking outlook and wish them all the best.

How can schools use their canopy design to reflect their brand?

The options are endless when it comes to shelter design choices and schools can pick from a huge range of colours for every aspect of their build. For steelwork, staff might consider matching it to their school’s colours to create a stronger connection between the exterior look of the grounds and the interior representation with things like uniform and logos. This can make White, Traffic Red and Ultramarine Blue great choices.

Schools may want to reflect their values with the colour of their shelter roof. For example, a secondary school might choose a classy Mint or Moondust to show their modern outlook, while a primary school might use a multicoloured shelter design to show their dedication to fun and play. Fabric canopies offer many opportunities to thoughtfully improve institutions’ grounds too, as they can come in anything from Lime Fizz to Domino Black and can work to blend in with the architecture or add bright focal points to a playground.
