What was the project brief?

Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh wanted six shade sails to provide shelter and lift the aesthetics on-campus. The team there thought that the perfect canopies would match to offer a cohesive look, with simple, attractive designs that complemented the existing architecture. They also needed to be made of high-quality materials that would offer staff and students efficient shelter for years to come during breaks, before and after lectures, and when socialising outdoors. We were delighted to be contacted and endeavoured to find the right solution for this client.

What was our canopy solution?

After considering our recommendations, Edinburgh Napier University chose to have six Maxima StarSail™ canopies added to its grounds. This model has a wide variety of applications, including for plaza areas, public spaces and outdoor areas at universities. We installed all of the shade sails with Squirrel Grey steelwork and Concrete coloured fabric roofs which blended in with the surrounding buildings, looked modern and smart, and created a feeling of unity. What’s more, they came with 5000mm X 5000mm specifications, plus fabric and steelwork which have industry-leading guarantees. This meant that they were more than up to the task of sheltering those in the university community from bad weather in winter and intense sun in summer – whether people were chatting with friends or getting ready for lectures.

What was the result of the shade sails?

Edinburgh Napier University was really impressed with the design and quality of our products. The set of six shade sails has made the outside spaces more appealing places to spend time, and they are incredibly useful for staff and students alike during daily life on-campus in all sorts of weather. The matching designs are an asset to the look of and branding at the site and their simplicity and functionality were just what the team wanted. We thought that this project went extremely well and hope that everyone at the university can now use the shelters to make their lives easier and get outdoors more often.

About the client

Edinburgh Napier University has three campuses across Edinburgh that offer state-of-the-art facilities for learning and research. These are the Craiglockhart Campus – which houses the Business School – the Merchiston Campus – which features engineering, the creative industries and more – and the Sighthill Campus – which serves those in the Schools of Applied Sciences and Health & Social Care.  The staff we worked with were friendly and helpful and we would love to provide them with further canopies in future years.

As Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh is a fantastic location in which to live, work and study. The historic Old Town includes attractions that few would get bored of, such as the Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile. The New Town is bursting with fantastic shops and restaurants, and there is plenty of culture in the range of galleries, museums and theatre performances available – plus the world-famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe that takes place every August.

What other kinds of canopies can benefit universities?

University of Liverpool Entrance CanopyShade sails are incredible shelters, but they’re not the only type that can be useful to universities. A dining canopy can encourage students to eat outdoors in all weathers and reap the health benefits of spending more time in the fresh air. Plus, they reduce pressure on overcrowded indoor facilities. Entrance canopies spruce up the way in to buildings to make them more accessible to new students and more impressive to prospective ones. Covered walkway systems help to keep people dry in the rain when queuing to get into lectures, events, shops or social spaces on-campus. Also, a cycle shelter ensures that staff and student bikes are safe, secure and orderly.

No matter your institution’s needs, we have a canopy that will suit them. If you’re thinking about installing a shelter to give your university and student experience a boost, email us at [email protected] today.
