What was the project brief?

Danes Hill School in Oxshott, Surrey wanted to find a product that would allow them to create a free flow undercover area for their pupils to enjoy. It needed to be appropriate for outdoor learning and play, be large enough to provide lots of space for many children at once, and have a bright design to bring positivity and colour to the space. The school contacted A&S Landscape to discuss how their canopies could achieve these goals.

What was our canopy solution?

Playground shelter we installed at Danes Hill SchoolThe Motiva Mono™ was chosen as the model for the job because it best fit all of the requirements. The staff had their canopy designed with steelwork of various colours, which looked vibrant and was bound to inspire the children’s creativity, alongside a classic Opal roof. This Motiva Mono™ was well-suited to the play and learning shelter, thanks to its versatile, monopitch asymmetric design. Plus, the curved roof looked attractive and complemented the existing architecture. The canopy was built to measure a huge 30500mm X 4000mm to offer more than enough space for the pupils to experience lessons, socialising and breaks outside, no matter the weather. It also matched a previous canopy that A&S Landscape had installed – a curved Motiva Duo™ – and, together, they added a colourful unity to the school’s outdoor facilities.

What was the result of the shelter?

Danes Hill School was delighted with the learning and play canopy; it provides the children with an uninterrupted covered space that can act as an outdoor classroom gazebo, so they can get the benefits of spending time in the fresh air during lessons. The colourful design looks fantastic on the playground next to the school building and the shelter will also let pupils blow off steam outdoors throughout the year. A&S Landscape worked tirelessly to ensure that this canopy was exactly what the staff and children needed, and would love to install further models for them in the future.

What are the benefits of outdoor learning?

Playground cover we designed for Bickleigh Down C of E Primary SchoolMore and more schools are exploring teaching outside of the classroom, but how does this help children’s learning and health? Being in nature can encourage inquisitiveness, a willingness to listen and better retention of information due to a heightened interest in the world around us, which can transfer to education in many different subjects. Outdoor learning can improve social connections and communication skills by helping young people to develop self-esteem, co-operation and respect for others’ needs. It can also aid both children’s physical and mental health through increased and more diverse movement, exposure to Vitamin D, and nature’s positive effect on stress.

To give pupils at your school some of the amazing benefits of learning outside all year-round, why not contact A&S Landscape to discuss installing your very own wooden outdoor classroom? We’ll be happy to help, whatever your needs. Simply email us at [email protected] now.
