With such a lot of emphasis on healthy lifestyles and exercise, they felt that they had to offer people a safe, secure and covered way to store their beloved bikes once they reached the school campus. More cycling and scooting would relieve congestion around the roads as well. Thameside Primary even added this to their website after the rack had been installed – The areas surrounding the school can become quite congested at busy times. Have you tried scooting or cycling to school? We have secure areas to keep your bike or scooter – give it a try!

What are the benefits of regularly cycling to school on children and how can schools encourage this activity?

With estimations that by 2050 70% of girls and 55% of boys will be overweight or obese, there has never been a more important time to cycle to school. In spite of everything, more people than ever are driving their children to school. A Sustrans study showed that whilst 12% of parents were driven to school when they were growing up, currently 35% of children are driven to school, so what has happened?

Parents cited worries over road safety as one of the complications to cycling to school, so programmes like ‘Bikeability’ where pupils acquire the fundamentals of road safety are an essential step in preparing youngsters for the cycle to school. Perfecting the route at the weekends when the streets are likely to be less busy is also good preparation.

The result was just as they had hoped. A smart addition to the campus in deep red, with opal polycarbonate roofing. The Cyclo City shelter had five racks, meaning that 10 bicycles could be stored safely under cover. We also installed a secure cycle shelter at Fairfield Primary School, which featured mesh panels. Find out more about the Cyclo City by downloading the free datasheet here. A bicycle can be a large investment and you want it to stay safe and dry whilst it waits to take you home!
