What Are The Benefits of Alfresco Dining For Children and How This Impacts Their Welfare

There is a lot of research that shows us the benefits of spending time outside; easing heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and muscle tension. It can also boost your mood. Enhancements in attention, memory and concentration have also been verified.

How does this impact children in school? Well, being indoors for nearly all of the day is linked to increased anxiety and depression. Couple this with the attract of computer games and social media at home and you can see how paramount it is to offer children as many opportunities to be outdoors during the school day as possible.

Spending time outdoors increases Vitamin D levels (an important hormone that helps to protect against a selection of diseases such as osteoporosis, depression, heart attacks and stroke). It is presented in studies that many of us do not get an adequate amount of this important vitamin, so more time outside is pivotal to help confront this deficiency.

With the longest break in the school day being the lunch break, a good remedy is alfresco dining. More and more schools are adding value to their outdoor areas, setting up outdoor dining spaces, with canopies, shade sails, umbrellas and even enclosed outdoor dining rooms. With increasing pupil numbers, this is a solution to the increased pressure that existing dining rooms come under as schools grow.

Continue reading our blog post to explore how schools can tackle this problem and allow their students to spend more time outdoors.

The Maxima Sail at 5 metres x 5 metres complete with waterproof fabric was the ideal choice for the individual dining areas offering wide waterproof coverage for the picnic benches along with excellent aesthetics, four of these have been used in line and all in matching colours. The 6 metres x 6 metres Maxima Sail complete with curved uprights and waterproof fabric makes a bold statement and is well suited to this application.
