What was the project brief?

Green frame shelter we fitted at Bickleigh Down Primary SchoolProviding a safe, caring environment are values at the heart of life at this Devon school. Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School, located in Plymouth, strive to ensure that this comes through in everything that they do. They feel safety and security are central to ensuring every pupil has the chance to fulfil their potential.

Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School also recognises that the great outdoors provides an excellent opportunity to enhance the learning environment. When they took the decision to improve their playground facilities with a shelter solution, they contacted A&S Landscape to explore options.

What was our canopy cover solution?

As is often the case, Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School already had the perfect site earmarked for their planned canopy cover. But the first thing for our design team to do is always to assess the suitability of a site and then to discuss with the customer the type of canopy architecture that would work well for the location.

Assessment of the site identified that the planned canopy cover would sit directly next to an existing part of the school building. Whilst this might seem a little counterintuitive, it can actually represent an excellent location for a custom canopy. The A&S Landscape product range includes our Motiva Duo™ canopy cover which is perfect for siting against low roofline buildings. Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School agreed that this would fit nicely with the vision that they had for their new playground shelter. With the further choice for them to individualise their canopy with tailored steelwork and roofing material colours, this meant that they were able to create a truly custom canopy design.

The Motiva Duo™ has a range of customisable options, as well as the choice of steelwork and polycarbonate roofing colours. These include the potential to add side panels, a variety of door options and the ability to choose aluminium downpipes. Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School selected Moss Green (RAL 6005) steelwork and an Opal polycarbonate roof. This meant that they were able to select an overall look for their shelter solution that fitted with the school’s existing brand themes.

What was the result of their new playground canopy cover?

The Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School canopy was located in a sheltered area of the school playground. With a low-level brick wall at the bottom, their Motiva Duo™ canopy was erected above this existing footprint. It created a fabulous area of shelter for outdoor play next to the school building. The lovely, curved roofline of the canopy cover was installed at an angle that added additional interest to the overall canopy architecture, and gave the look a really individual vibe.

About the client

Located just over five miles away from the lovely Devon city of Plymouth, Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School’s ethos is based upon the Christian values of Love, Forgiveness, Hope, Spirit and Aspiration. Each week, they nominate a pupil to receive their ‘Values Star Award’ to help embed these values into the children’s daily lives.

Involving the school’s children in charity endeavours is also an important part of their culture too. In 2020, the children raised £230 for the ‘Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day’. And in 2019, pupils were apparently captivated by the Toilet Twinning campaign that enables schools to twin their school toilets with a toilet block in Africa. The Toilet Twinning charity aims to bring clean water and safe sanitation to some of the world’s poorest people. The response from the Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School pupils is a great example of how the children are learning through taking action, and understanding some of the basic inequalities that exist in the world.
