Woking Hospital at Heathside Road in Woking Adds a New Outdoor Canopy

Surrey's Woking Community Hospital offers a variety of healthcare services to residents in the area. It has departments for cardiology, dermatology, physiotherapy, and many other things. Every year, thousands of patients come to the hospital, which provides both in-person and outpatient care. The hospital needed a covered outdoor area as more and more people were using its facilities. This space would allow patients and staff to be able to wait or take breaks in comfort. Their main priority was to keep people safe from the weather while still making sure they could see and get to where they needed to go. They wanted a robust, low-maintenance canopy that would fit in with the hospital's surroundings and provide useful shelter for everyday use.

Challenges

  • Weather protection needed: The hospital needed a way to keep patients and staff safe from the rain and sun when they were outside.
  • Limited space: The installation had to fit into the hospital site’s restricted layout.
  • Easy access: There had to be no steps or other obstacles at the entrance so that everyone could go in, including those with mobility issues.
  • Aesthetic match: The new structure had to match the design of the existing building and not look out of place.

Our Solution

A&S Landscape installed a WeatherSpan® canopy that was 12147mm x 3535mm. The hospital needed a canopy that was both strong and stylish, and this aluminium one fit the bill.

The team did a complete site survey and worked closely with hospital staff to make the design meet their needs. We made sure that the structure would work within the space and that all access routes would be clear.

The aluminium framework was painted with a RAL 7015 Slate Grey finish. The roof panels were made of opal polycarbonate, which allows natural light while also providing shade and privacy.

The final result was a shelter that is sleek, strong, and matches perfectly against the hospital building.

Key Features and Materials

  • Structure: Made from powder-coated aluminium with our Duracoat™ finish in RAL 7015 Slate Grey for long-lasting durability.
  • Roofing: Poly-tuff™ opal polycarbonate panels let in soft light and keep UV rays out.
  • Design: A straight monopitch roof with one side higher than the other, perfect for mounting next to buildings.
  • Guttering: Comes with built-in aluminium gutters and downpipes that do a great job of letting rainwater drain.
  • Access: The sides are completely open, making it easy to move around and get in without having to step over anything.

Results

  • All-weather shelter: The canopy keeps patients and staff dry while they wait or take a break.
  • Better use of the site: The hospital can now use this space more effectively all year long.
  • Accessibility supported: The open and level design makes it easy for everyone to get about, even those in wheelchairs.
  • Professional finish: The Slate Grey frame and opal roof give the hospital a modern aspect that goes nicely with the rest of the building.
