What was the project brief?

West Ham Park in Newham, London was searching for a shade sail that could bring a splash of colour to its seating area and offer shelter in various kinds of weather. This would always allow families to enjoy sitting outside in the park while watching their children play, runners to relax and refuel with a snack, and couples to take a break after a long walk. They wanted to have a canopy installed as part of renovation works to improve facilities for local people. We endeavoured to complete this project with our utmost passion and attention to detail, as we do every time.

What was our shade sail solution?

Following a discussion about our products, West Ham Park chose our Maxima Sail™ for their new addition. As they wanted to brighten their space through their renovations, we weren’t surprised by this selection; this model has an eye-catching design that is available in a wide variety of colours, and it is a great fit for outdoor eating and play areas. The team at the park picked out a orange fabric roof – which brought feelings of joy and summer to the space, even in winter – and this contrasted wonderfully with the galvanised steelwork. Plus, we built the shade sail to specifications of 5400mm x 5400mm on a total of four uprights, so several benches could benefit from its protection in different seasons.

What was the result of the new shelter?

The custom canopy was a successful and popular part of the renovation works at West Ham Park. Everyone from families with children having picnics or playing outside to dog walkers or runners in need of a break can now sit under the shade sail in any weather and enjoy relaxing in the great outdoors. The fabric orange roof couldn’t be brighter and it has made the canopy a striking, positive feature of the space. It brought smiles to our faces when we heard how well our product was received by our customer and the general public who love visiting the park.

About the client

West Ham Park has a huge range of things to do – including wandering peacefully through the Ornamental Gardens, having fun in the paddling pool or playground, and playing sports such as cricket and tennis. There is also lots of space for runners, dog walkers and cyclists to fit in their regular exercise and for families to spend some quality time together. It was wonderful to supply a shelter to a client that is such an integral part of the community and keeps local people at its heart.

West Ham Park is located in the London Borough of Newham, an area as diverse as the capital itself. There are opportunities for top-quality retail therapy at Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford City, as well as theatrical delights at Theatre Royal Stratford East. The Showcase Cinema features the biggest Bollywood screen in the country, while Newham City Farm hosts animals from shire horses to alpacas.

What kinds of shelters can be useful for parks and public spaces?

Shade Sail covering picnic tables.Getting some fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors is an essential part of daily life, which is why open green areas are such an important part of the community. Canopies can help to make parks and public spaces more usable all year round. For example, tensile fabric canopies can offer shelter to children during breaks from playing in the playground and keep them safe from potentially harmful UV rays when they’re out in the sun. Dining canopies can ensure that a spot of rain doesn’t deter people from visiting and enjoying a picnic, as they can stay dry under such structures on benches with the family. What’s more, shelters can be useful for parents watching their children playing sports, such as at football matches, so they’re not bothered by the weather.
