Umbrella Shade Added to Woodlands Primary School in Telford
Signal Yellow - RAL NO. 1003
Reaseheath College in Cheshire wanted to create more sheltered space outside for the students. The team had identified a courtyard area which could benefit from a canopy and would create a great spot for the students to socialise in during their breaks. A&S Landscape was asked to propose a design, as well as manufacture and install the final product.
Our design team worked closely with the college to decide upon the ideal shelter for the area. It was agreed that the popular tensile fabric roof Maxima Umbrella™ canopy would be the ideal product. Measuring 8m x 8m, it creates plenty of covered space underneath for several students to gather at once. And thanks to the single upright design, the umbrella doesn’t take up valuable floor space either.
To match the college’s branding, the steelwork was finished in a bright Signal Yellow, adding a pop of colour to the area. A neutral Boulder fabric was chosen for the roof, which contrasts perfectly with the upright. We also made the umbrella using a waterproof PVC fabric, so it can provide protection from the rain, wind and snow.
Reaseheath College is thrilled with the new addition to the campus. The eye-catching design is a great feature for the courtyard, and the shelter is extremely effective at protecting the ground from the weather. In fact, the college is so happy that they rated A&S Landscape five stars for their work.
Now the students have a covered area they can use in between their lessons and during break times. The umbrella will keep them cool during the summer and dry when it is wet – the best of both worlds! The shelter has also allowed the students to spend more time outside in the fresh air, which will have many benefits on their mental wellbeing.
Based in Cheshire, Reaseheath College is one of the UK’s leading land-based colleges offering a range of further and higher education courses. Our team was excited about the opportunity to work with such a fantastic organisation and play a part in further improving the incredible facilities on offer.
Although we work with many primary schools and nurseries, it’s always great to install a shelter at a college and university too. Spending time outdoors is an effective way of destressing during a busy day and many higher education establishments are adding canopies to allow their students the opportunity to get outside and enjoy some fresh air throughout the year.
Our range of canopies for colleges are very popular amongst higher education organisations in the UK. Often colleges will have brilliant outdoor facilities which can’t be used during periods of poor weather. Our shelters can protect large areas from the elements, allowing the college to get better use out of their space for various applications.
One popular use of our canopies is to create an external dining space. This is often a cost-effective solution to creating more seating options as intake figures rise and budgets remain limited. A dining shelter also relieves pressure from existing dining spaces inside, improving the lunchtime experience for the students and catering staff. In addition, there are also many proven benefits to eating outdoors and a canopy would allow you to offer this option all year round.
Often colleges are based in large campuses, with buildings and classrooms spread out. Adding a covered walkway is a great method of making a site seem more connected. A walkway will also protect students from the poor weather as they move between lessons, bringing an end to damaged books and bags.
A&S Landscape also offers a range of bike shelters and stores. This is a great way of encouraging students and staff to cycle to college, as they know there is a secure and sheltered area for their bikes. Our range of shelters can be customised to fit your needs, with the option to add sides, doors and mechanical locks.
As we know, the school-age population has been growing. The quantity of five to ten year old pupils in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) within 2010 and 2016.
The Department for Education has the challenge to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are a load of ways that this can be accomplished. New schools are being created, free schools are being funded and existent schools are obtaining capital funding to preserve, enhance and grow facilities. With capital being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build more classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a lot of different uses.
