The school wanted to make better use of its outdoor space so pupils could spend more time outside in comfort. Liverpool’s weather often limits outdoor activities. Rain and wind meant the students could not always gather, eat, or learn outdoors.

The college wanted a canopy that would give reliable shelter throughout the year while matching the modern look of their building. They needed a trusted company to design, supply, and install a structure that was safe, strong, and long-lasting.

Challenges

  • Limited outdoor shelter: Students and staff needed protection from rain during lunch and social times.
  • High footfall: More than 1,000 pupils use the outdoor area daily, so the space needed to be large and easy to access.
  • Weather exposure: The site is open and can be windy and wet, especially during the winter months.
  • Modern surroundings: The new school building has a sleek design, so any addition needed to fit in visually.

Our Solution

A&S Landscape visited the site to assess space, ground levels, and building layout. After reviewing the options with the college, we recommended our Motiva Duo™ canopy. This design features a duopitch curved roof, perfect for large, open spaces where students gather.

We installed one Motiva Duo™ canopy measuring 15,000 mm x 15,000 mm. This provides a wide, open shelter large enough for groups of pupils to eat or wait safely outside. The canopy offers a bright, welcoming space that can be used throughout the school day and for after-school activities.

The installation was carefully planned to minimise disruption during term time. Our experienced team managed every stage, from design drawings to final inspection. We worked closely with school leaders to ensure the finished structure met both aesthetic and practical needs.

Key Features and Materials

  • Structure: Solid steel framework finished in our Duracoat™ colour system for long-term corrosion resistance and a clean appearance.
  • Roofing: High-quality Poly-tuff™ polycarbonate roof panels provide clear, durable protection while letting in natural light.
  • Design: Symmetric duopitch curved roof offering equal height on both sides for balanced coverage.
  • Drainage: Alu-Tuff™ aluminium gutters and downpipes to manage rainwater efficiently.
  • Safety: Bright, protective post-pads fitted around each upright to keep students safe.

Results

  • Weather protection: Students now have a large, dry space to gather during breaks and lunchtimes.
  • Improved use of space: The area is used for dining, outdoor learning, and socialising, even in bad weather.
  • Visual harmony: The canopy matches the modern look of the school building and enhances the site’s appearance.
  • Increased flexibility: Staff can use the space for outdoor lessons and activities all year round.
  • Positive feedback: Pupils and staff appreciate the new area and the comfort it brings during busy school days.

Conclusion

The new Motiva Duo™ canopy has made a real difference to St John Bosco Arts College. The large covered area allows students to enjoy fresh air without worrying about the weather. Staff now have more options for teaching and supervising pupils outside the classroom.

A&S Landscape was proud to help the college achieve its goal of creating a practical and welcoming outdoor space. The project shows how the right canopy design can add value, improve daily life, and support the school’s caring ethos.
