What was the project brief?

Mothers Against Violence are a charitable organisation located in Manchester. As a group, they came into being following a series of tragic violent crimes in the city. From their original inception, they now provide amazing support to the local community, including mentoring, educational awareness, workshops and outreach. At their community centre located in Hulme, they wanted to make the most of their outside spaces by adding an outdoor garden shelter.

There are many benefits of doing this, not least of all the fact that it maximises space and creates an indoor/outdoor space that can be enjoyed year-round.

What was our shelter solution?

White canopy we fitted at Mothers Against ViolenceThe Mothers Against Violence resource centre is of single story construction and has double doors opening on to a paved area outside. With windows on either side of the double doors, a solution was needed that would maximise the outdoor space without compromising access and light going into the building.

Getting the right aesthetic is important, especially when the best solution is to construct a shelter solution that will be located directly next to an existing building. With an expansive range of options to choose from, there is a shelter solution for just about every space. One of the benefits of working with the A&S Landscape team is that we have a vast amount of experience of installing canopy covers in a diverse range of situations. Our recommendation to Mothers Against Violence was that they consider the Motiva Linear™ straight roof canopy. This product is a fabulous configuration for canopy covers which are to be located against an existing building elevation, as was the case with the Mothers Against Violence project.

As the size and configuration of this product is flexible, we were able to install a canopy which spanned the length of the existing windows and doors, and that created a smart, veranda effect to the outdoor space. The final installation at the Hulme centre was 9750 mm by 2740 mm in size, and was finished in White (RAL 9010) Dura Coat™ steelwork and an Opal polycarbonate roof, selected from our colour palette of options.

What was the result of the shelter solution?

The finished article has given Mothers Against Violence a smart new shelter covering an already paved area. This new canopy cover gives an almost ‘galleried’ feel to the area, and now provides an area of usable space which is available regardless of weather conditions.

Whether Mothers Against Violence are holding public events, or have children enjoying time in their outdoor spaces, this additional covered area gives the charity more options and new ways to use their centre.

Testimonial/client feedback

It was great to hear from Mothers Against Violence about their experience of working with A&S Landscape, as well as their thoughts on the product itself. Ian Swanston, Trustee and Secretary of the charity told us:

“The team have been wonderful and the service they gave has been excellent. It was a pleasure having them on site. I would like to add the overall service has also been very good. We will recommend A&S Landscape and hope to work them again in the future.”

About the client

Although Mothers Against Violence came about through adversity in the city of Manchester, its positive impact upon the community has been immense. With their campaigning for positive change, not just in Manchester, but across the country, they are now aiming to increase their offering still further. Their new plan is to provide counselling, therapy, mentoring, educational courses and ex-offender rehabilitation courses, all from what they are calling their ‘Contemporary Hall’. They want their services to be available to everyone that needs them, and they have launched a new project to help them to achieve this.

The charity’s exciting new plans are known as ‘Project Smiles’. The plans also include a community garden, and the smart new canopy cover that has been installed will therefore be able to be enjoyed by many people more in the future.
