What was the project brief?

Kingsnorth Primary School in Kingsnorth, Kent wanted to install a new standalone structure in their outdoor space to create a fun area where their pupils could play in all weathers. It had to be robust and waterproof, as well as colourful to inspire the children’s imagination. The staff at this institution contacted A&S Landscape for advice on the best way to move forward with the project and they were more than happy to assist.

What was our playground canopy solution?

Playground canopy we designed for Kingsnorth Primary SchoolPicking a shelter from the fantastic array of products available wasn’t an easy task, but Kingsnorth Primary School managed to find the right model with the Maxima Tepee™. Combining Flame Red steelwork and a Turquoise Green roof, the team put together a vibrant design that was sure to spark pupils’ imaginations and positivity. The Maxima Tepee™ was a great choice for the playground shelter, because it works well as a standalone structure and boasts a waterproof and UV resistant PVC roof, plus solid steel framework. This means that the school’s canopy would have no trouble providing shelter in bad weather, and the fabric roof would be practical as well as striking and bright.

Also, the 6000mm X 6000mm measurements offered lots of space for pupils to get creative and socialise with their friends at playtimes.

What was the result of their shelter?

The children at Kingsnorth Primary School love spending time underneath their new, colourful playground canopy as it lets them have their breaks outside whether it’s sunny or rainy. The design reflects the caring and creative nature of the school and the staff were over the moon with the project. Plus, the free standing canopy is a fabulous addition to their outdoor facilities. It could be used for other purposes too, such as an outdoor classroom gazebo to bring something different to the pupils’ learning experience. A&S Landscape was glad to discover that the shelter would be put to such good use and help the children fit more fresh air into their school days.

About the client

Kingsnorth Primary School is a Church of England school that combines its original Victorian building with modern facilities including two netball courts, a music room and a library. They teach their pupils five Christian values: thankfulness, compassion, trust, endurance and friendship. Children are also encouraged to consider their ‘own feelings, thoughts and actions and those of others’. A&S Landscape found the team at this institution to be clearly dedicated to their pupils and easy to communicate with. We would love to work with them again, should they have need of another canopy!

Kingsnorth Primary School is located in Kingsnorth, close to Ashford. Local residents are lucky enough to live right in the heart of Kent, the ‘Garden of England’. Ashford is known nowadays for providing retail therapy at the McArthurGlen Ashford Designer Outlet – which features over 100 discount luxury brand stores – and its train links to London St Pancras and Paris. It also remains close to its rural and historical roots, with rolling countryside as a backdrop and nearby attractions like the Georgian Belmont House and Sissinghurst Castle Garden.

What are the benefits of fabric shelters for schools?

Green dining shelter we made for Oasis Academy CoulsdonWhen it comes to choosing a canopy, there are many polycarbonate models to consider. However, don’t forget about the fabric alternatives, because they have features that may suit schools’ needs even better.

  • Flexibility – they can be installed as standalone structures or as separate units.
  • Customisation – fabric canopies offer some of the most eye-catching colour combinations. Why not try Sky Blue steelwork, Deep Orange fabric or a Lime Fizz shade cloth? There’s something for everyone in a Maxima™ model, no matter a school’s preferences or design schemes.
  • Versatility – from the durable Maxima Tepee™ to the striking Maxima Sail™, fabric shelters can be used in many different ways. They are great additions to any playground, can offer new areas for learning or sports and make fun focal points in schools’ outdoor spaces.
