A&S Landscape was delighted to work with John Fielding Community Special School on a project to provide shelters outside the classrooms. The Motiva Linear canopies were designed to cover the classroom entrances and provide sheltered areas which can be used by the children, whatever the weather.

The Motiva Linear canopy was the best fit for effectively covering the spaces outside the classrooms. The design has large, useable areas, kept posts to a minimum and was very aesthetically pleasing. The steelwork was in Green (RAL 6005) and the roofing in Opal polycarbonate. The new canopies looked smart as soon as they went up.

How young people with SEBD needs can benefit from spending time outside and how we can enable this to happen more regularly

It is essential to identify the broader needs of every student whether they are in a mainstream school or a special school, but it is so paramount to acknowledge the personal and emotional needs of a young person. As educators, we are responsible for preparing children for their next step, be that further education, apprenticeships or finding a job. We have to teach equality and diversity not just for the changing society that we live in, but to help our students acknowledge that no matter what pitfalls they may have conquered in their lives, they have the same prospects and the same capability as everyone else.

Check out our blog to learn more about how young people with SEBD needs are impacted by open space.

The children at John Fielding Community Special School now have shade and shelter to enjoy more time outdoors without the weather getting in the way! For some of the children with additional needs, the option to have more outside space where they can go to have some ‘quiet time’ or space to reflect, is very important. Now they have more options and a smart canopy which keeps both the sunshine from glaring through the windows in the summer and the rain from wetting the playground in the winter.

We enjoyed working on the project and it was nice to hear the positive feedback from the school – “I was very happy with the end result and the quality of the product. We are really happy with the canopies, they have been excellent in this warm weather.”
