Glenwood School Adds Multiple Shade Sails to Playground Areas

Glenwood School has fantastic playground facilities, but the pupils couldn’t use the outside space when the weather conditions were poor. A&S Landscape worked with the school to design a set of shade sails.

Nine Maxima Sail structures were installed at various points around the school grounds. Each canopy features brightly coloured fabric, including mid blue, red and bright yellow. The school also chose to add post pads to the shades, providing extra protection for the pupils.

The new shades have transformed break times at Glenwood School and already have been a very popular addition. The pupils can enjoy their playtimes outside, in the fresh air, every day – no matter the weather. This allows them to let off steam and make use of the great play equipment.

Teachers can also take their classes outside under the shade sails, without having to plan around the conditions. This alternative learning environment helps to engage the pupils and create a memorable lesson. Parents could stand underneath the canopies too, sheltered from the elements at the end of the school day.

The benefits of playing outside on young children and why we need to encourage more children to do so

Converging studies demonstrate that children’s outdoor play is essential for their healthy development and academic performance. This subject identifies the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also highlights the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The extensive interventions needed to reduce parents’ fears require practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces. That is a big project that will take multiple years to achieve.

Carry on reading to explore why outdoor play is so crucial for child development, why it is declining and how schools can intervene.
