Generator Canopies Installed at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands

Russells Hall Hospital is a busy general hospital in Dudley, West Midlands, that serves about 450,000 people across the region. The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust runs the hospital, which offers a wide range of essential services, such as A&E, cardiology, and maternity care. The hospital needed to protect the new backup generators they had just installed as part of their ongoing infrastructure upgrades. These generators are very important for keeping services functioning efficiently when the power goes out. Therefore, the covers they need must be secure, weather-resistant, and easy to see to prevent damage or tampering. The management team wanted a strong, high-quality solution that was custom-built for the hospital. They also wanted a supplier who had experience working in NHS settings to do the installation.

Challenges

  • Protecting Vital Equipment: The hospital needed a reliable solution to protect generators from the weather and environmental damage.
  • Security Needs: The generator shelters needed to be lockable, and only authorised staff could gain access to them.
  • Space Restrictions: The canopies had to fit into tight spaces with little room for foundations and working access.
  • Durability and low Maintenance: The Trust sought a solid, long-lasting structure that wouldn’t need much maintenance over time.

Our Solution

A&S Landscape supplied and installed three Motiva Linear™ canopies that met all of the hospital’s needs. This model was perfect because it had a strong steel frame and clear polycarbonate roof panels.

The first two canopies were 4500 mm × 1500 mm, and the third was a little bigger at 4500 mm × 2000 mm. Each structure had polycarbonate panels on the sides and ends for added protection. Each unit has one lockable door that makes it easy to get in and out when needed.

We used our high-quality Dura-coat™ finish to paint all of the steelworks a sophisticated RAL 7024 grey. This finish is very resistant to wear and tear.

Key Features and Materials

  • Steel Framework: Made of heavy-duty steel and finished in RAL 7024 grey with our Dura-coat™ finish that protects it from the weather.
  • Roofing Panels: Our Polycarbonate system creates a clear polycarbonate roof that lets in light and provides weather protection.
  • Side and End Panels: Polycarbonate coating for extra shielding from the rain and wind.
  • Secure Access: Included one lockable entrance door on each canopy to prevent people from getting to the equipment without permission.
  • Alu-Tuff™ Guttering: Durable aluminium rainwater drainage that matched the steelwork for a consistent finish.

Results

  • Equipment Fully Protected: Now, the canopies protect the generators completely from rain, debris, and bad weather.
  • Improved Security: Lockable doors prevent unauthorised people from getting to the generators, which improves safety.
  • Durable and Low Maintenance: The Dura-coat™ steel double-coated polycarbonate roofing doesn’t need much maintenance.
  • Professional Finish: All three units were designed and painted to match so that they looked nice and uniform on-site.
