Project Specification

What was the project brief?

Co-op Academy Failsworth in Greater Manchester needed two canopies to act as dining shelters, so that its students could reap the benefits of eating outdoors throughout the year. They wanted a sleek, modern design that complemented the architecture of their buildings and could also withstand bad weather, accommodate large numbers of children simultaneously and be suitable for installing seating beneath it. The team there contacted us as they liked our designs, approach and that we had worked with lots of local schools previously.

What was our dining shelter solution?

We looked at several options in detail with Co-op Academy Failsworth and they decided that the most fitting one was the Motiva Duo™. This model has a stunning, duopitch curved roof where both sides are at the same height and the structure creates a free standing canopy, making it an eye-catching feature of any school’s grounds. The Opal polycarbonate roofs of the two shelters worked well with the look of the nearby buildings and the 20000mm X 10000mm specifications offered plenty of room for multiple benches to be installed beneath. The dining canopies worked as ideal places for many students to eat and chat with friends, while getting some fresh air and time away from studying. What’s more, the strong steel and polycarbonate meant that rain and wind would be no match for the structures.

What was the result of the canopies?

Co-op Academy Failsworth loves the dining shelters; they let the students eat outside at break times which is beneficial for their wellbeing and helps to reduce pressure on indoor facilities. The contemporary feel of the canopies is welcome and attractive, while the curved roof design is also incredibly functional and effective in rainy weather. The school was impressed with the pair of shelters, and we’re pleased that our products have helped them to improve outdoor facilities for students and staff alike.

About the client

This institution is based in Failsworth, a town in Greater Manchester. Being near the well-known city has its perks, as it’s bursting with sporting attractions, events, arts and culture. You can visit multiple football grounds, galleries and museums in one day – from the Whitworth to the Imperial War Museum North. Plus, there’s countryside to enjoy close by too, such as the Lake District.

Co-op Academy Failsworth is a calm, supportive school that boasts modern facilities, including a Soccer Centre. It says that it wants all students ‘to fulfil their ambitions whether they be academic, musical, sporting or creative’, and its values are founded on the Co-op ‘Ways of Being’ – Show you care, Do what matters most, Be yourself always and Succeed together. We enjoyed working with the staff and found them to be responsive and friendly throughout the process.

Why should you invest in a shelter for your school?

Canopies have many different benefits for schools, staff and students. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider installing one.

1. Protection from bad weather

All of the shelters we sell can easily deal with a wide variety of unpredictable British weather. We manufacture them with high-quality, durable materials that ensure maximum coverage, so time outside isn’t limited by rain or wind.

2. Architectural improvement

Canopies can revolutionise the look of a school and the range of models and customisation options mean that there is one to suit any brand or style. We have the right steelwork and roof options for you – whether you want to cheer up your playground with bright colours or make your outdoor areas look more sophisticated with a modern design.

3. To increase facilities

There can be many pressures on schools, including rising student numbers. A canopy can help to ease this by creating a new area that can work as an outdoor classroom shelter or dining shelter based on the requirements of each day.
