Captain Webb Primary School in Telford add Playground Canopy

Captain Webb Primary School were expanding their nursery centre and wanted to create a covered play area as part of the work. A&S Landscape thoroughly enjoyed working with this local school to improve the children’s break times.

  • Size: 18500mm X 3000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Gentian Blue - RAL NO. 5010

  • Roof:
    • Opal

A straight roof Motiva Linear canopy was installed alongside the early year’s classrooms. The mid blue steelwork adds a pop of colour to the area and works well with the surroundings. The canopy also offers protection against harmful UV rays, thanks to the opal polycarbonate roofing, which was very important to the school team.

In addition to the shelter, A&S Landscape also supplied dark blue rubber surfacing to create a softer and safer ground. This provides an extra level of protection and safety for the young children, so the staff can have peace of mind when the canopy is in use.

The finished playground area is already a very popular addition with the nursery pupils. Even when the weather conditions are poor, break times can be enjoyed outside in the fresh air. This allows the children to let off some steam during the day and make use of the outdoor space. Parents can also stand underneath the shelter at the end of the school day, protected from the elements.

Why is outdoor play so important for primary school children’s development and what steps can we take to facilitate this?

Play is the core of childhood, when children are well and inarguably being themselves, but for a lot of children the opportunity to play outside, enjoying exercise and fresh air, is restricted. Today’s generation of children aged 4-11 years spend several hours playing computer games, on iPads and watching TV and so this valuable period of activity is more fundamental than ever to offset long hours inside in front of a screen. Astonishing recent studies show that a third of children play outdoors for half an hour or less in a typical day. That’s less time outdoors than prison inmates get! Of the 1,000 UK families who took part in the survey, 82% blamed the unreliable British weather.

Encouraging more outdoor play is not just about the physical aspect of their health though. Active play during the school day are also helping children’s mental health. It shows them how to share their thoughts and feelings and listen to those of others. The practice of expressing themselves, risk-taking and sharing are all important stepping stones on the path to reaching adulthood with the facility to discuss, debate and empathise.
