London Mathematical Society – Small Grants for Education Scheme

The London Mathematical Society offers grants to support mathematics education and professional development. These include Small Grants for Education, which stimulate interest in mathematics from Key Stage 1 onwards through enrichment and innovative engagement, and Mathematics Education Conference Grants, which support travel and subsistence costs for attendees of mathematics education conferences.

Eligible Organisations

The primary intention of the Small Education Fund is for activities where other funding sources are unavailable, however, anyone based in the UK, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands at the time of application and when the event, visit, or meeting is planned can apply. Conference grant applications are open to organisers of regular mathematics education conferences.

Suitable Projects

The Small Education Fund will partially fund events aimed at enabling involvement in Maths from Key Stage 1, right up to undergraduate level. Projects should aim to enhance and enrich the study of Maths beyond the curriculum, engage the public with Maths, or explore unusual ways of communicating Maths. The grant does not cover full economic costs of projects, room hire, or teaching supply cover.

Mathematics Education Conference Grants cover travel and subsistence expenses for attendees of mathematics education conferences, but retrospective applications are not considered.

Application Process

You can apply by downloading the application form and sending it via post or email. Only one grant per Scheme, per person, per LMS financial year (1 August – 31 July) is allowed. If a grant is for a conference or event, the grant can potentially be transferred to a co-organiser who is still based in the UK, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands.

Important Dates

There are four deadlines each year at the end of August, November, January, and April. All awarded grants need to be claimed no later than 31 July in the second year of the grant. Any grants not claimed within this two-year period will be withdrawn.

Funding Range

Up to £800 is available for Small Grants for Education. Up to £2,000 is available for Mathematics Education Conference Grants.
