Birmingham City Hospital at Dudley Road in Birmingham Adds Covered Outdoor Space

Birmingham City Hospital, located on Dudley Road, is a large NHS facility run by the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. It offers a lot of different services, such as emergency surgery, maternity care, children’s services, and cancer treatment. The facility welcomes hundreds of patients and visitors every day. The management team realised that there was a need for a covered outdoor space next to one of their busy entrances. The current setup exposed people to the weather when they were waiting or moving between buildings. Therefore, they wanted a canopy that would be sturdy, last a long time, and fit the healthcare setting.

Challenges

  • Limited shelter at important entrance points: Patients and visitors, when waiting outside, had to do so in the rain and harsh sun, which was uncomfortable.
  • High daily foot traffic: The chosen solution had to be strong enough to handle constant use by patients, staff, and emergency services.
  • Accessible space required: People with mobility aids, wheelchairs, or prams had to be able to get to and from the area safely.
  • Aesthetic considerations: The structure had to fit in with the hospital’s modern facilities and not impede important access routes.

Our Solution

A&S Landscape provided and set up a Motiva Linear™ canopy that was designed to fit the demands of the hospital. The structure ended up being 6800 mm × 4000 mm, which gave people enough coverage when using the entrance.

The steelwork was painted Jet Black (RAL 9005) to match the exterior of the hospital and give it a sleek, professional image. The Opal polycarbonate roofing lets in a lot of light while still providing shade and protection from UV rays.

Before installing the canopy, our team did a comprehensive site survey to make sure the structure would fit perfectly against the building without blocking access or movement. We worked closely with the hospital’s staff to make sure that services were not disrupted during the project.

Key Features and Materials

  • Steel Structure: Duracoat™ Jet Black (RAL 9005) gives it a clean look and protects it for a long time.
  • Roofing: Opal Polycarbonate panels offered UV protection and let in natural light.
  • Design: The monopitch (asymmetric) roof design moves rainwater away from the building and the pathways.
  • Drainage: With matching Alu-Tuff™ gutters and downpipes, this system makes sure that water is managed well.
  • Mounting: Installed flat against the building with no need for side panels, which keeps the area open and easy to get to.

Results

  • Reliable all-weather cover: The canopy keeps everyone dry and out of the sun, making things more comfortable for everyone.
  • Better access: People who use wheelchairs or walking aids can easily get around because the sides of the canopy are open.
  • Long-lasting and easy to maintain: The steel structure and polycarbonate roof are made to last, which means hospital workers don’t have to do as much work to keep them up.
  • Smart appearance: The black finish and tidy installation fit perfectly with the hospital’s modern design.
