The Philip Bates Trust

The Trust specifically advances the education of young people up to the age of 25 in the arts by supporting projects that encourage and develop creative and artistic achievement, including workshops and similar initiatives.

Eligible Organisations

Individuals and organisations in the UK are welcome to apply, including schools.

Priority is given to organisations with charitable status or not-for-profit organisations with a proven track record of delivering community benefit aligned with the Trust’s aims, and while applications are accepted from across the UK, those based in or delivering projects in the West Midlands are particularly encouraged.

Individuals under 25 may apply in limited cases, usually for smaller grants.

Suitable Projects

Creative and artistic projects for young people are funded, such as music workshops led by professional artists, theatre productions, music activities, visual arts initiatives, or other hands-on artistic experiences with clear skills development outcomes.

Individuals can also apply for help to purchase instruments or equipment to enable them to pursue their creative interests.

Application Process

The Trust accepts applications by post. They also accept online applications via a form on its website.

Applicants should submit a clear summary of the project, costs, funding sources, and impact, and ensure applications are made well in advance of the project start date.

Individual applicants are required to include at least two written references, and organisations must provide two recommendations supporting their work with young people.

Important Dates

The Trustees meet three times a year, usually in February, June and October, so you should aim to submit your application the month before the next meeting. Applications should normally be received by the end of January, May, or September to be considered at the next Trustees’ meeting.

Funding Range

For organisations, grants are usually up to £500, while grants to individuals are typically smaller, generally ranging from £100 to £250, and are usually awarded for one-off artistic costs rather than ongoing fees or living expenses.
