Innovative Geography Teaching Grants

Eligible Organisations

Secondary school and higher education geography teachers can make an application. Applications must be made as a partnership between a UK secondary school teacher and a lecturer or researcher from a UK higher education institution, and higher education partners are expected to hold a PhD at the time of application.

Suitable Projects

Projects which benefit both the students and wider teaching community through the development of teaching materials are considered.

Funded projects should introduce creative, engaging and original methods of teaching geography, particularly those developed collaboratively between secondary schools and higher education institutions, and the materials produced will be published on the Royal Geographical Society’s website.

An example of a past project includes the creation of an interactive tour Kampala. The project, in partnership with the University of Northampton, allowed students to evaluate the extent to which Millennium Development Goals had been achieved.

Application Process

An application form is available online and should be sent to [email protected] upon completion.

Applicants are required to read the Royal Geographical Society’s guidance for grant applicants before applying, and two supporting statements must be submitted, including one signed referee statement from the Head of Department, Head Teacher or Employer of the lead applicant, sent directly by the deadline.

Important Dates

Applications must be submitted by 15th February each year.

Funding Range

There are 2 grants of up to £1,000 available.
