Daiwa Foundation: Small Grants

Schools are able to apply for up to £9,000 to fund projects which support the interaction between the UK and Japan. The Daiwa Foundation provides grants to support a wide range of Anglo-Japanese projects and aims to fund projects as a contribution rather than covering full costs, typically supporting around one in five applications.

Eligible Organisations

Individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK are invited to apply for funding. Applicants may also be based in Japan, provided their projects actively promote or strengthen UK–Japan relations, and schools are explicitly eligible to apply.

Suitable Projects

Eligible projects can cover all fields of activity, including grassroots exchanges, conferences and cultural initiatives, with new initiatives especially encouraged, which promote the relationship between the UK and Japan. However, the Foundation is unlikely to fund continuing or regularly recurring events without strong justification.

Application Process

Applicants must use the appropriate online application form depending on whether they are applying from the UK or Japan, and all applications must be completed in English.

Important Dates

There are two application deadlines a year, 31st March and 30th September. Decisions are normally made by 31st May for March applications and by 30th November for September applications, and applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Funding Range

Small Grants can range from £2,000 to £9,000, with typical awards of around £3,000–£4,000, and funding is intended as a contribution rather than full project funding.
