Warlingham School in Warlingham, Surrey add Outdoor Dining Canopy

Warlingham School knows how important it is for its pupils to eat well and enjoy some time outdoors in the fresh air. When they have had some time outside and are well fed, they are much more receptive to learning. Warlingham School had a large outside space, close to the sports courts, which was looking for a sense of identity and it was decided to reinvigorate this space by adding a new outdoor dining canopy for students.

A&S Landscape, specialists in school canopies, were excited to work with Warlingham School. With more than 40 years’ experience in canopies and school shelters, we were confident that we could offer just the right product for the space. The decision was made to install a Motiva Duo, steel and polycarbonate canopy at an overall size of 25000mm x 10000mm. The steelwork was Sapphire Blue and the roofing opal polycarbonate. The design created a large open space with plenty of light, under which dining tables could be added.

How rising intake figures are impacting schools and how they can use shelters to combat this issue

The Department for Education has the duty to create the 420,000 new school places that are required between 2016 and 2021 and there are plenty of ways that this can be completed. New schools are being constructed, free schools are being funded and existent schools are being given capital funding to repair, upgrade and develop facilities. With budgets being stretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build more classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a lot of different uses.

The result is a lovely, large and bright covered dining area which pupils can use to dine, socialise, learn or just enjoy some fresh air. The canopy has Alu-Tuff (aluminium box profile) guttering and downpipes to ensure that rainwater is effectively managed and the life of the canopy maximised. The school and the pupils are rightly very proud of their new dining canopy. It is well used by pupils and takes the pressure off the dining hall at mealtimes. As well as this great project, we’ve also worked with many other schools in Surrey including Furzefield Primary School.
