Cycle Storage added to St. Joseph’s Catholic School

St Joseph’s Catholic School is a smaller secondary school, which prides itself on offering a first class education to all pupils. Part of this education is obviously physical education and it was important to offer students and teachers (lead by example!) the opportunity to cycle to school.

Bicycles are a large investment and in order to encourage people to cycle, you have to give them the ability to safely lock and secure their bicycle up when they arrive. It was this remit that was given to A&S Landscape by St Joseph’s Catholic School.

A&S Landscape was pleased to offer a solution and we installed a Cyclo ‘City’ cycle store to the size of 8160mm x 2000mm, with Green RAL 6005 steelwork and clear roofing. The cycle store included 10 cycle racks which allow for up to 20 bicycles to be safely stored on campus. It looks rather smart too if we do say so ourselves! We also installed a cycle shelter at Thameside Primary School in Essex.

“We were all very impressed with A&S Landscape’s paperwork and communication. The workmen were also very good ambassadors for the company. We shall certainly be in touch should we have any further projects in the future.”

What are the barriers preventing children from cycling to school and why we should be working to removing these obstacles?

With forecasts that by 2050 70% of girls and 55% of boys will be overweight or obese, there has never been a more important time to cycle to school. Regardless, more parents than ever are driving their children to school. A Sustrans study detailed that while 12% of parents were driven to school when they were growing up, these days 35% of children are driven to school, so what has happened?

Parents mentioned worries over road safety as one of the preventives to cycling to school, so programmes like ‘Bikeability’ where children gain the core of road safety are a pivotal step in preparing children for the cycle to school. Going over the route at the weekends when the roads are likely to be quieter is also good preparation.

Carry on reading to find out more about how schools can help their students to cycle to school.

A&S Landscape don’t just offer cycle stores, we also update, reinvigorate, enhance and redesign outdoor spaces with canopies, shade sails, tepees and even multi-use games areas. So, should you want something along these lines, we would be pleased to talk you through the options. Outdoors, we have it covered!
