Imagine what a terrible shock the school and children experienced when their school campus was destroyed by Storm Desmond. There was an urgent need to create another campus nearby as quickly as possible to minimise the disruption to the students and their families.

The decision was taken to create a campus of modular classrooms three miles down the road on the former site of Pennine Way Primary School in Harraby. In order to link the classrooms, A&S Landscape installed covered walkways between the buildings.

A&S Landscape designed a bespoke covered walkway using a Motiva Linear straight roof canopy, installed at 68358mm x 8000mm, with steelwork in RAL Grey 7000 and ALU-TuffTM  (aluminium box profile) guttering and downpipes in a matching Dura-coatTM  finish. The roof was installed in opal polycarbonate.

The result was a new temporary network of modular classrooms, which are linked by a covered walkway, meaning that the staff and students can be confident that they won’t have to dash between buildings if the heavens open. The feeling now is one of purpose rather than a number of separate temporary, unlinked classrooms.

How rising intake figures are impacting schools and how they can use shelters to combat this issue

The Department for Education has the difficult task to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are a large amount of ways that this can be completed. New schools are being built, free schools are being funded and current schools are obtaining capital funding to uphold, improve and expand facilities. With budgets being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build additional classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have loads of different uses.
