Mereside Church of England Primary School Springfield Enjoy New School Shelter

Mereside Church of England Primary School is a primary school in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. They are keen to encourage pupils to enjoy as much time outdoors in the fresh air as they can. Break times and lunchtimes are when the children want to be outdoors but as we know, sometimes the weather can be less than kind. Indoor playtimes are an all too common occurrence and a school canopy was a great solution at Mereside Church of England Primary School.

A&S Landscape has been transforming outdoor spaces for schools, colleges and universities for many years. We have a wide range of canopy products from fabric UmbrellasTepees and Shade Sails, to steel and polycarbonate canopies. In this case, we installed a steel canopy from our Motiva Linear range at 9570mm x 3000mm. It ran alongside the building and offered a nice sheltered area outside the classroom doorway which could be used by the children whatever the weather.

The children can enjoy the new space all-year-round. Mereside C of E Primary School could even store some items here or have an occasional lesson. They have a flexible space and a new school canopy to enjoy!

What actions can we take against the issue of childhood obesity and why should we work to fix this crisis

Children are commonly not in charge of the food they have or the exercise they undertake. On top of that, when they exercise, the respiratory implications and body weakness can cause embarrassment amongst their peers as they find it hard to move. Despite that, it is vital to aid healthier eating, more exercise, and assist a child who lives with obesity in fighting the depression, anxiety, stigma, and the health and academic consequences related with obesity, which is a task much more critical than it first seems.

We can clarify some of the solutions Dame Sally Davies outlines in her report: Time To Solve Childhood Obesity into three factors.

• Children need to play outdoors.

• Children need access to healthy foods.

• Plans need to be put into effect by schools, manufacturers, health services, town planners and politicians to create better opportunities for children to have access to outside play and healthy food regardless of their social-economic position.
