Jesson’s Primary School add New Playground Canopy

Jesson’s Primary School in Dudley, West Midlands say this about their setting - “Helping children be the best they can be”. Part of offering children a broad learning experience is the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

Project Specification

  • Product: Motiva Linear™
  • Size: 23180mm x 4000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Squirrel Grey - RAL NO. 7000

  • Roof:
    • Opal

The new playground canopy provides space for the children to do just that. Running across the length of the exterior classroom wall, the linear canopy stretches more than 23m. This offers shade and shelter and will help to moderate the internal temperature of the classrooms.

A&S Landscape offers a wide range of canopy solutions, from shade sails and tepees to linear canopies with polycarbonate roofing. It was decided that the Motiva Linear product would be most appropriate for this requirement. We installed the canopy at 23180 x 4000mm, with glazed panels to the side elevations. All steelwork was in grey (RAL 7000) and the roofing in Opal polycarbonate. For added safety, Jesson’s Primary School added 16 post pads to their canopy, protecting students from any playtime mishaps as they enjoyed the new outdoor space.

“We are delighted with the canopy, it is exactly what we wanted. A big thank you to Tom and Shane and the fitters for their good humour and professionalism. They worked very hard with little need for school staff to be disturbed. A really professional job. The school are really happy, they are putting the newly created space to very good use.”

Headteacher – Jesson’s Primary School

Why schools should encourage lessons to be taken outdoors and what actions they can take to ensure this can help all-year-round

For school children, different environments can enthuse and delight, causing an increased capableness to learn new information. At a young age, standard classrooms can provide little stimulation for children and educational growth can become stunted. By exploring the use of outdoor teaching, children can find novel and stimulating ways of learning. Fresh air, and the ability to teach in a considerably larger space, can open up new doors to the method that lessons are taught and the tasks which can be completed.
