Large Dining Canopy Added to Elfed High School in Buckley

Elfed High School in Buckley had the idea to install a dining shelter so students could eat outside in all sorts of weather. The staff were searching for something that could have other purposes too, such as the beneficial option of outdoor learning, and be large enough to cover a space fit for many children to spend break times in. Also, they hoped for a design that matched their uniform colours and could stand the test of time.

The institution’s team really liked our products and the service we provided in their consultation period. They eventually settled on the Motiva Duo™, a popular and sturdy model which boasts a symmetric curved roof design that is both aesthetically pleasing and excellent at keeping out the rain. 20000mm X 7500mm measurements were plenty large enough to shelter multiple students looking to enjoy breaks in the fresh air, whether they were socialising or dining, and Sapphire Blue steelwork and an Opal roof worked well with the colour scheme.

The dining shelter has been a hit at Elfed High School. The design choices came together to create something that can offer various benefits, by also possibly acting as a wellbeing area or an outdoor classroom shelter. The shades match the school colours for a cohesive visual feel and the dining canopy has proved to be truly valuable. Email us at [email protected] if you’d like to explore your shelter options.

Three Fun Outdoor Canopies Installed at Barkers Lane County Primary School in Wrexham

Barkers Lane County Primary School in Wrexham wanted a trio of adaptable outdoor canopies to expand its facilities for its pupils’ benefit. Two Outdoor Canopies Installed at Abertillery Learning Community in Monmouthshire, Wales

Abertillery Learning Community in Monmouthshire, Wales was formally a college site and became an all-through (3-16) school in 2016; the college site had minimal outdoor coverage, and therefore an installation was needed to better accommodate and shelter the school students during their break and lunch times.

Ysgol Dinas Bran in Llangollen Create Outdoor Picnic Area with Fabric Canopy

White canopy we made for Ysgol Dinas BranLocated in the beautiful town of Llangollen in Denbighshire, and surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, making the most of the outside spaces was a top priority for this Welsh school. With an area of land on the school site that was completely unused, they wanted to create a brand new picnic area. The challenge for Ysgol Dinas Bran, however, was the fact that the land was very open to the elements. But they knew that despite this, there were wide-ranging benefits of utilising this space to give their students an opportunity to enjoy being outside.

Our team was tasked with creating an attractive area, protected from the weather and usable throughout the year. To this end, a plan was drawn up to install a Maxima Umbrella™ tensile canopy system from our range of shelter solutions. With features including waterproof PVC fabric covering, and a steel shelter frame finished in our trademarked Dura-coat™, it’s a robust and sturdy option for areas exposed to the elements.

A&S Landscape offers additional options to tailor a custom canopy to the individual requirements of the client. Ysgol Dinas Bran selected from our extensive colour palette with Slate Grey (7015) steelwork and a White canopy cover. The end result is an attractive picnic area, protected from the worst of the weather and giving the students the opportunity to enjoy break times in the fresh air.

The design of the fabric canopy was created using galvanised Gentian Blue steelwork and completed with a Turquoise Green fabric waterproof roof. The overall size was 12000mm x 6000mm.

All the team at Whitchurch High School were really happy with the results and particularly satisfied with the students’ response to their new ‘hang-out zone’. Everyone at the school can now benefit from the additional outdoor space that was created for a very affordable price.

Being able to create more places to play, sit and learn outdoors is an important aspect of living in the UK. Not being able to do something because it’s too wet or too bright can be really frustrating, just as much for pupils as teachers and parents. Young people’s well-being should be at the forefront of our minds when we’re creating places for them to spend time. Being outside and spending time in nature is something that we all need to be encouraged to do. That’s why we feel that sheltering outdoor spaces in schools with protective canopies is a real step in the right direction.

Play Area Shade Sail at Somerton Primary School in Newport

What was the problem?

Somerton Primary School in Newport wanted to encourage their pupils to spend more time exercising outside during the school day. However, the weather often meant breaks had to be spent inside the classrooms, and the children weren’t able to get much fresh air. As with many other primary and secondary schools, the budget was tight and didn’t allow for a shelter or canopy. Luckily, Newport City Home’s community programme helped to fund this important and improve the facilities at the school.

What was our shade solution?

One fabric sail shade structureShade sail designed for Somerton Primary School was manufactured and installed in an area of the playground at the school as part of a complete package. The Maxima Sail™ measured 5000mm x 5000mm, and so created plenty of covered space. The four uprights and Alu Tuff guttering were finished in a slate grey colour, which works well with the dark blue fabric. A waterproof PVC material was used so that the sail could protect the pupils from the rain as well as the sun.

What was the result?

The staff and pupils are very happy with the new playground sail shade. Playtimes can now be spent outside, no matter the weather! This has allowed the children to let off steam and refresh ahead of their next lessons, leaving them motivated to learn.

The school could also install picnic benches under the sail and use this as an outdoor dining area too. This would also make a great place for storytimes and the pupils will love the alternative learning environment. Our versatile canopies and shade sails can be used for a wide range of applications for many years, making them a cost-effective and worthwhile investment.

A little bit about the client…

Based in Newport, Wales Somerton Primary School provides a great educational experience for the local school children. The school site features a dedicated nursery building, which is a purpose-built area for three to five year olds. It’s great that these young children will also be able to benefit from the playground sail shade, receiving a great education from such an early and important age.

It’s always great when we get to work with schools who play such a big role in the local community. It was a pleasure to contribute to this fantastic area and play a part in the education of many of the children now and in the future.

Why is outside play so important to primary and secondary school children?

Playground tepee we designed for Hedgewood SchoolSpending time outdoors is a big part of our childhood and so it’s crucial that future generations also get the same experience. Outside play is also a great source of exercise and helps children develop their physical skills. By spending time playing outdoors, children are more likely to run, jump, catch, skip and move their bodies.

Playing outdoors also helps children learn and understand the natural world by experiencing it for themselves, first-hand. Learning the names for different trees, plants and species is much easier when you can explore nature and see everything yourself. This is also a great way of encouraging children to learn about our environmental issues and how we can make a difference ourselves.

Children’s imaginations are also developed and stimulated outdoors as they utilise the space around them during their playtimes. Our range of multicoloured polycarbonate roof canopies is also brilliant at creating a stimulating environment. When the sun shines through the coloured roofing, the light casts onto the ground making a beautiful effect.

Some of Our College Canopy Projects

Modern Canopy Umbrellas Added To Brand New Torfaen Learning Zone in Gwent

With state-of-the-art facilities, bright modern buildings comprising glass and steel, it was the need to define complementary social spaces for its students that brought this Welsh College to A&S Landscape for help.

Originally delayed from a physical opening due to COVID-19, the Cwmbran campus unveiling was postponed until January 2021. But the highly anticipated opening of Torfaen Learning Zone has now finally seen new students welcomed to the sparkling modern campus. During the development stage, A&S Landscape had been brought on board to help design some of the outdoor social spaces of the campus. We had previously worked with Gwent College that formed part of the brand new Learning Zone, and it was a pleasure to help with this fabulous new canopy cover project.

Located on a raised terrace surrounded by smart wrought iron balustrade, Torfaen Learning Zone wanted an attractive canopy umbrella system that would provide a protected social space. The flexibility of our Maxima Umbrella™ worked perfectly for this purpose. With the option for the canopy to be raised or not, it’s a great choice that fits a multitude of different settings. For this project, Torfaen Learning Zone chose an all-White (RAL 9010) colour scheme for both waterproof canopy cover and steelwork. This created a stunning aesthetic that fitted perfectly with the modern themes of both the inside and outside of the building.

Outdoor Seating Canopy at Coleg Gwent at Newport Campus

Sail Shade we designed for Coleg GwentThere was a large area to be covered and the design wanted to be smart and modern, yet functional. With so many different canopies on the market, it was hard to decide, but the shade sail from our Maxima range was selected. The structure was made up of two square sails on six uprights. The sails were white shade cloth which gave the modern appearance that they were looking for.

The resulting space now has modern tables and benches underneath and the shade sails look fabulous. This new area, which was previously an unused space, adds seating for students to eat and drink socialise or indeed study. All protected from the sun’s UV rays to ensure students remain sun safe. These sails can be configured in any number of ways, overlapping, square or triangular sails, or indeed completely bespoke canopies.

From linear steel and polycarbonate canopies, to fabric canopies, we had many options and in the end it was the fabric Shade Sail from our Maxima range which was selected to create a new outdoor dining canopy.

The Maxima Shade Sail structure was made up of 5 shade sails. Overall measurement was 18596mm x 3719, held on 12 posts. The canopy looks striking in its modern design and the bright white fabric brightens the whole area.

Entrance Canopy at Coleg Cambria in North Wales

Entrance canopy we fitted at Coleg CambriaOur Motiva range of canopies includes both straight and curved, steel and polycarbonate canopies. These can be designed and fitted in a wide range of shapes and sizes and finished in any number of colours. The product that was chosen for Coleg Cambria was a Motiva Entro™ curved roof canopy at 3000mm x 2000mm. This included Alu Tuff aluminium gutters and downpipes to manage rainwater effectively. The steel was finished in Telegrey (RAL 7046) and the roof was clear polycarbonate.

Once the canopy was fitted the entrance to the building looked very smart indeed. Where new visitors may have missed the doorway previously, they can now see clearly where to enter the building. They now have shade and shelter from the elements as well. Overall a lovely addition to Coleg Cambria. A&S Landscape has a wide range of canopies. Holywell Learning Campus in Flintshire Add Fabric Shelters

Canopy we designed for Holywell Learning CampusGreat design is the framework behind the experience of ‘it just feels right’ and you know it when you see it. A&S Landscape was approached to work on a job at Holywell Learning Campus in Flintshire. They were looking to add something with a little flair to the outdoor areas, something to give shade from the sun and protection from the rain whilst also adding something fun.

We installed two Maxima Umbrellas™, each supported on a single upright, at 6000mm x 6000mm, featuring sunny yellow steelwork and Alu Tuff guttering (RAL 1033) with white fabric. The Maxima Umbrellas instantly added to the spaces but also complement the colours found in the playground flooring and the school colours themselves. The result is outdoor fabric canopies that fit neatly in the space whilst adding a spark of imagination to the clean lines of the school. In short, it just feels right.

To get something that feels like that takes experience. It takes working with a dedicated design team who have spent years producing products that feel right in every context. Fabric Canopy Installed at North Wales Playgroup at Bryn Deva Flying Start Centre

But you don’t need to invent new space, it’s already there, it just needs delineating. Not only that but in wide outdoor spaces where the rain can fall and the sun can blast down, a place to duck and cover is really useful. Shaded areas on a sunny day can keep your students playing outside whilst offering a shelter in the rain.

When Jigsaw Playgroup at Bryn Deva Flying Start Centre contacted A&S they were looking to do just that, to add a fabric canopy structure and split up their wonderful outside space. The Maxima Waterproof Umbrella™ is supported on a single upright and looks great, the blue umbrella canopy picking out the blue that was already present in the Jigsaw Playgroup playground. The Maxima Waterproof Umbrella is a tensile canopy system that is less formal than other outdoor playground shelters and adds a little magic to the space.

Our Maxima Waterproof Umbrella™ is very popular with the 55 children aged 2-3 years at the Jigsaw Playgroup. It gives them a catalyst for play, an opportunity to zone space and somewhere to get a little shade on a sunny day so they can reap the benefits of an outdoor learning zone for longer. A supervisor at the Playgroup gave us a brilliant review and said ‘All in all we love it and have had very positive comments from parents and staff members.’ Fabric canopy structures are a great option to zone space in your playground. And something like the Maxima Waterproof Umbrella™ comes in a variety of colours too.

Now the patients of Mynydd Mawr Hospital can wait outside the building sheltered from the rain, wind or sun. The canopies have been an important addition to the site and have greatly improved the existing facilities. Outdoor School Shelter in Gwynedd at Ysgol Gynradd Llanelltyd

Ysgol Gynradd Llaneltyd CanopyThere’s no doubting the benefits of our increased connection to each other through the internet but it is now widely thought that the sheer amount of time our children spend on screens, as opposed to outside, connecting with nature, is damaging to their health and progress. It is a shame because so much of the world outside is really very beautiful and if your view is of the rolling hills in Wales it would be a travesty to miss out. But we don’t have to. By putting as much attention on access to the world outside as we do to the world at the other side of our screens, we can generate a whole host of health benefits.

A&S Landscape was asked to install a generous outdoor shelter at Ysgol Gynradd Llanelltyd in Gwynedd, Wales to make sure that students had access to the outside all year round. Our Motiva Linear™ straight roof canopy is an antidote to the indoors. We installed two here, one at 12875mm x 2875mm and another at 14235mm x 2500mm in a smart grey steelwork (RAL 7024) with matching Alu-Tuff™ box profile guttering finished in Dura-Coat™ paintwork.

Screen time is not bad time, neither is indoor time but, in a quote attributed to mothers everywhere ‘everything in moderation’. Making sure students have as much access to the outdoors, all year round, as they do any other stimulus is vital and that can be achieved with an effective outdoor straight roof canopy like the Motiva Linear™.

Whether you are looking to add a little outdoor learning to your curriculum or else you’ve decided that some alfresco dining is the way forward, A&S Landscape has it covered. Take a look at our gallery of finished projects and if you have any questions, get in touch.

Three Covered Walkways Added to Pentre Canol in Denbigh

Grŵp Cynefin and Denbighshire County Council wanted a set of covered walkways for their partnership project, Pentre Canol, an extra care housing scheme for older people in Denbigh, North Wales. The Grŵp Cynefin team – who are committed to the development of sustainable communities – wanted to add three modern canopies to the brand new site so that residents could move comfortably around it and enjoy the fresh air in all sorts of weather.

They contacted us as we had previously supplied a shelter for another of their sites, Hafod Y Gest, and they requested Motiva Linear™ canopies once again. This model was a fantastic choice to create three covered walkways, because it has a monopitch straight roof and offers excellent coverage in wind, rain and sun. This meant that bad weather wouldn’t prevent the residents from getting outdoors. What’s more, we installed the shelters with Opal roofs and Anthracite Grey steelwork, which continued the contemporary look of the site.

The staff and residents at Pentre Canol enjoy making use of the three canopies throughout the year. The covered walkway systems allow everyone to take breaks in the fresh air and move between the buildings with ease, no matter the season, and they add something special to the aesthetic of the housing scheme. Curved Outdoor Canopy Installed at Bettws Flying Start Playgroup in Bettws

Blue shelter we designed for Bettws Flying Start PlaygroupBettws Flying Start Playgroup in Bettws, Wales had the idea to add an outdoor shelter to their facilities so children could enjoy time outside in all weathers. The staff at the centre – which caters for 18 children of 2 and 3 years old during school term time – wanted the canopy cover to offer great protection from wind and rain, be able to be used for many activities including play and dining, be safe and look attractive. A&S Landscape was thrilled to be contacted and soon got to work on finding a solution.

The Motiva Duo™ was the winning model; Bettws Flying Start Playgroup loved the style of the duopitch curved roof which would also provide maximum protection in bad weather. The playgroup team chose an opal polycarbonate roof and blue steelwork to create a fun design, and blue post pads to make sure that the children’s safety was a priority under the canopy. Built to specifications of 7000mm X 4000mm, there was also room for a range of activities to be enjoyed year-round.

The children love eating and playing beneath the new outdoor shelter. The bright, classic colours have spruced up the playgroup’s outside space and the symmetric curved roof offers practical, long-lasting shelter. St Helen’s Primary School Add Blue Polycarbonate Roof Shelter

In combination with our building contractor client we produced a straight polycarbonate roof canopy at St Helens Primary School, Swansea. Multiple Canopies at Ysgol Y Garnedd in North Wales

What was the problem?

Ysgol Y Garnedd School, located near Bangor, wanted to create the perfect environment to learn. They knew that to achieve this, a holistic approach was required, and the children needed access to the outside spaces all year round. To do this, a high-quality cover system was needed. That’s when they brought in A&S Landscape, who would be responsible for the design, manufacture and install of multiple canopies.

What was our solution?

A total of eight canopies were added all together. Five of which had a retractable roof, whilst the remaining three were from the straight roof range. The retractable canopies all benefit from an attractive metallic roof (4040-3D), whilst the three flat roof canopies were built with opal polycarbonate roofing. The two types of shelter offer a sun shade during the summer months, and weather protection during the winter months. The retractable canopies also offer the added choice element for the outdoor area.

What product did we use?

Straight roof canopy we made for Ysgol Y GarneddThe three straight roof canopies were all built to a Motiva Linear™ design, these all have an asymmetric roof, meaning that one side is higher than the other. They are a popular choice for covered walkways, but also offer extra protection for indoors when constructed against a building. This is due to the sun canopy cooling the area beneath by several degrees.

The remaining five were all retractable canopies, built to an overall size of 4400mm x 3538mm. Operating like a retractable, waterproof awning, but with a much sleeker and modern look, these are amazing shelters for when you don’t require a cover system all year round.

What was the result?

The result of the multiple shelter installation was fantastic. Now outdoor spaces can be used as outdoor classrooms, and the school frequently use the sheltered areas for circle time, assemblies, and as a place to eat lunch and refresh. The school are so pleased that their outdoor space can be used all year round, and their envisioned shelter solutions have become a reality.

A little bit about the client…

Ysgol Y Garnedd School, located just South of Bangor in North Wales, was a wonderful school to work with. Evidently dedicated to the needs of the pupils, they are a part of the healthy school scheme, putting the children’s health and wellbeing at top priority.

We felt inspired by their optimism, and it was a real pleasure to work with all staff members we worked with. It was fantastic to know that all canopy structures installed were made to the highest quality of materials – and so the pupils’ enjoyment of the outdoors and fresh air will be long-lasting.

What is a straight roof canopy?

A straight roof canopy is where one side of the roof is slightly higher than the other, with the lowest pitch typically available at 5 degrees. The performance characteristics of this fantastic product are second to none, and due to its flexible design – there is a huge range of bespoke options. For example, a coloured roof can be added which is great for nurseries, or if you want to make an outdoor room, the shelter can even come with side panels. And as they are so well-suited to being elevated against a wall, they even make a great door canopy!
