Gosden House School Love Their New Playground Canopy in Guildford
Weaverham High School wanted to create a space outside for the students to socialise in, all-year-round. A&S Landscape worked with the Student Council to create a design that met all their requirements.
Slate Grey - RAL NO. 7015
A Maxima Umbrella canopy was installed at the campus, measuring 5m X 5m. The single upright is finished in a subtle Slate Grey colour, which works well with the Olive fabric roof. Made with a PVC waterproof material, the school can use the umbrella in all weather conditions. A&S Landscape’s team fitted the structure during term-time safely and efficiently.
The students love their new shaded area and it has quickly become a very popular place during break times. Come rain or shine, they can gather underneath the cover to shelter from the elements while enjoying some fresh air. During exam periods, we’re sure this could be the perfect spot to relax and unwind too. The students can also eat their lunch outside under the shelter, relieving pressure from the dining hall facilities.
Converging studies demonstrate that children’s outdoor play is pivotal for their healthy development and academic performance. This topic shows the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also flags the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The prolonged interventions necessary to reduce parents’ fears require practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces. That is a big objective that will take several years to achieve.
It’s great that Weaverham High School recognised the importance of providing a sheltered space outside. And we think it’s fantastic that the students had such a huge part in the decision-making process, giving them ownership of the project.
A&S Landscape has worked with schools across the country, supplying a range of canopies, shade sails and shelters.
