The University of Reading was converting an area of the campus and decided to create a social study space for their students. A&S Landscape was brought on board to design, manufacture and install the shade sails.

Three Maxima Sails were added to an area of the campus, each measuring 4000mm X 4000mm. The university chose two lava red and one charcoal grey sail which contrast against each other to create a striking effect. The slate grey steelwork also works well with the fabric colours and the surrounding buildings.
Underneath the shade sails, the university added several benches. This means the area can be used as a dining, study or social space. A great option if revision groups want to work in the fresh air or refresh before an exam. Whether it is too cold or hot outside, the sails will help to protect the area from the elements, meaning it can be used throughout the year.
The University of Reading has transformed the once disused space into a popular area which is used by students and staff. Installing a canopy is a cost-effective method of creating a new space which can be used throughout the year. We offer a range of designs, which can be modified and made to your exact specifications.

There is a lot of research that emphasises the benefits of spending time outside; reducing heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and muscle tension. It can even uplift your mood. Enhancements in attention, memory and concentration have also been proved.
How does this impact children in school? Well, being indoors for nearly all of the day is linked to increased anxiety and depression. Couple this with the allure of computer games and social media at home and you can see how important it is to offer children as many opportunities to be outdoors during the school day as possible.
Spending time outdoors raises Vitamin D levels (an important hormone that helps to protect against a selection of diseases such as osteoporosis, depression, heart attacks and stroke). It is shown in studies that many of us do not get enough of this important vitamin, so more time outside is critical to help tackle this deficiency.
