St Hilda’s School approached A&S Landscape to discuss the project and we were delighted to help. With a wide range of fabric canopies as well as steel and polycarbonate canopies, we were confident that we had just the right product for the project.
We installed a Motiva Linear canopy, with black steelwork and opal polycarbonate roofing into the playground. It is a large structure, measuring 9600mm x 2981mm so it allows for outdoor reading and learning as well as play.
The canopy has aluminium box profile guttering and downpipes. This ensures that rainwater is effectively managed so that the canopy can be enjoyed by pupils for many years to come.
A common but under-researched area of social and emotional development in children is comprehending the importance of spending time outdoors and how significant the effects are. For such a integral aspect of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat astonishing. Not least because, the research that currently exists shows that there is clear evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a major positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These initial studies come from several disciplines using a broad range of methods that all lead to the same notion.
Specifically, studies focusing on; risk-taking, sensory skills, confidence, and anxiety show how outdoor play favourably influences children’s social and emotional development.

The children and staff at St Hilda’s are rightly very pleased with their new school canopy. The children can be outside now even when it is raining. The perfect solution.
“The canopy has made a huge difference, the children can now go outside when it is raining!”
