Shade Sails at Milton Park Primary School Portsmouth

We were proud to work with Portsmouth Council to develop this scheme for Milton Park Primary School. A series of StarSails offering weather protection for those passing between buildings and at the same time a masterpiece in architectural design, giving a sense of style and distinction to the whole area. The StarSails were further enhanced by uplighters and the resin-bound stone surfacing.

The overlapping design meant that special attention was given to levels and heights and clever modelling of the whole area ensured that there were no clashes. We worked with the contractor on the location of socket bases allowing much of the groundwork to be completed ahead of lowering in the StarSails by crane. Each project has its own challenges and we are used to reaching solutions quickly, easily and efficiently. You can download the brochure for this sail design to see more examples of the canopy installed at schools.

The area has added a new outdoor space for pupils to enjoy. Whether for outdoor dining, socialising or just enjoying some fresh air between lessons. We’ve also worked with Mayfield School in Portsmouth, as well as Milton Park Primary School. If you are thinking of adding something similar to your school, please get in touch, we would be delighted to help – [email protected] or call us on 01743 444100.

Why is playing outdoors so important for the social and physical development of children and how can we allow them to spend more outside?

Play is the centre of childhood, a time when children are well and truly being themselves, but for a great number of children the opportunity to play outdoors, enjoying physical activity and fresh air, is limited. Today’s generation of children aged 4-11 years spend a lot of hours playing computer games, on iPads and watching TV and so this precious period of activity is more critical than ever to balance long periods indoors in front of a screen. Astonishing recent research show that a third of children play outside for half an hour or less in a typical day. That’s less time outdoors than prison inmates get! Of the 1,000 UK families who took part in the survey, 82% blamed the unreliable British weather.

Encouraging more outdoor play is not just about the physical aspect of their health though. Active play during the school day are also helping children’s mental wellbeing. It educates them how to share their beliefs and feelings and listen to those of others. The practice of expressing themselves, risk-taking and sharing are all key stepping stones on the path to reaching adulthood with the means to discuss, debate and empathise.
