Christ Church C of E Primary School in West Midlands Install Playground Canopy

Christ Church C of E Primary School wanted to add an area of shade and shelter to their playground. After carefully reviewing a range of quotes, the school choose A&S Landscape’s design as the superior option.

Project Specification

  • Product: Motiva Linear™
  • Steelwork:
    • Ultramarine Blue - RAL NO. 5002

  • Roof:
    • Opal

A Motiva Linear straight roof canopy was added alongside two of the classrooms at the school. The Ultramarine Blue finish on the steelwork gives the area a splash of colour. Harmful UV rays will also be blocked by the Opal polycarbonate sheeting used on the roof.

Now more break times can be spent outside in the school’s fantastic playground facilities. When it starts to rain, the pupils can gather under the cover to continue playing and having fun. Wet breaks are a thing of the past at Christ Church C of E Primary School! And when the sun does decide to make an appearance, the children can enjoy some shade from the canopy too.

“It all went very smoothly, everyone is happy with the canopy.”

The shelter won’t just be useful during playtimes either. The teachers can now take their classes outside to provide an engaging learning environment. The Great British Weather will never spoil a lesson plan again. Plus, at the end of the school day, the parents can wait comfortably under the shelter for their children.

How rising intake figures are impacting schools and how they can use shelters to combat this issue

The Department for Education has the challenge to create the 420,000 new school places that are required between 2016 and 2021 and there are a great deal of ways that this can be completed. New schools are being built, free schools are being funded and current schools are collecting capital funding to repair, upgrade and extend facilities. With budgets being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build new classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have no end of different uses.

Some uses of outdoor sheltered areas include:

• Outside dining areas

• All-weather sports pitches

• Outdoor classroom

• Bicycle Shelter

• Outdoor theatre
