Chiswick High School is a secondary school where children in Hounslow, Middlesex are supported and challenged in equal measure. Standards and expectations are high and the children achieve good results across a broad range of subjects. Additional dining space was the requirement at the school and A&S Landscape worked with a national builder to install the StarSails that covered a new designated dining space on the campus.
Squirrel Grey - RAL NO. 7000
Porcelain Green
To create a large space where children could dine and use at break times, we added four StarSails from our Maxima range. The fabric was waterproof in porcelain green which made a smart, bright statement. The steelwork was in Grey (RAL 7000). Once the picnic benches were added the area really came to life. All our colours can be seen here. Take a look if you are in need of inspiration for your project.
The new outdoor dining area is well used by the pupils of Chiswick High School. They can do their work under the StarSails, eat their lunch, have a chat or simply take in some fresh air. It won’t matter any longer what the weather is doing! We also worked on other great projects in Middlesex, including Heathgate House. As more schools grow in pupil numbers, the challenge of space at lunchtime is becoming a common one. If you think your school could benefit from a covered outdoor dining area please get in touch. We have a number of designs for you to consider.
There is a lot of research that proves the advantages of spending time outdoors; easing heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and muscle tension. It can also improve your mood. developments in attention, memory and concentration have also been attested.
How does this effect children in school? Well, being inside for almost all of the day is connected to increased anxiety and depression. Couple this with the call of computer games and social media at home and you can see how necessary it is to offer children as many opportunities to be outdoors during the school day as possible.
Spending time outdoors improves Vitamin D levels (an important hormone that helps to protect against a selection of diseases such as osteoporosis, depression, heart attacks and stroke). It is presented in research that many of us do not get enough of this important vitamin, so more time outside is fundamental to help manage this deficiency.
