Cirencester Primary School Add Straight Roof Playground Canopies
Read More
By adding a large steel and polycarbonate Motiva Duo canopy from our range, the school created an all weather dining area for students. The curved roof canopy was built to an overall size of 12202mm x 9976mm. It had Alu-Tuff (aluminium box profile) guttering and downpipes and an opal polycarbonate roof. The space now completes the courtyard area and means that pupils can use it come rain or shine.
As schools grow in pupil numbers, the strain is often felt in areas such as the dining room. An outdoor canopy can be a great solution to this problem, without the need for a permanent or costly traditional building extension. We think the new space at Brownhills School looks fantastic and we are pleased to hear that it is being well used by pupils. We also worked with Rushall Primary School in Walsall, installing a purple coloured shelter.
There is a lot of research that shows us the benefits of spending time outdoors; alleviating heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and muscle tension. It can also enhance your mood. developments in attention, memory and concentration have also been verified.
How does this effect children in school? Well, being inside for a large amount of the day is connected to increased anxiety and depression. Couple this with the appeal of computer games and social media at home and you can see how paramount it is to offer children as many opportunities to be outdoors during the school day as possible.
Spending time outdoors improves Vitamin D levels (an important hormone that helps to protect against a range of diseases such as osteoporosis, depression, heart attacks and stroke). It is presented in studies that many of us do not get an adequate amount of this important vitamin, so more time outside is vital to help deal with this deficiency.
With the longest break in the school day being the lunch break, a good solution is alfresco dining. More and more schools are upgrading their outdoor areas, adding outdoor dining spaces, with canopies, shade sails, umbrellas and even enclosed outdoor dining rooms. With soaring pupil numbers, this is a solution to the increased pressure that existing dining rooms come under as schools grow.
Continue reading our blog post to explore how schools can combat this problem and allow their students to spend more time outdoors.
