Bedfont Primary School Red Shade Sail

Bedfont Primary School adds New Shade Sail

Bedfont Primary is a larger than average primary school, close to Heathrow. They now pride themselves on their facilities, stating on their website “We have excellent facilities both inside and outdoors”. A&S Landscape was delighted to work with Bedfont Primary on a broad project to add both entrance canopies to the school building and a shade sail in the playground area.

Project Specification

  • Product: Maxima Sail™
  • Size: 5800mm x 5800mm x 6700mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Moss Green - RAL NO. 6005

  • Fabric:
    • Cherry Red

We selected two different kinds of canopies, the Motiva Cantilever canopy, for the entrance canopies adjacent to the school building, and the Maxima Sail for the shaded grass area in the playground. Coloured post pads were added to the entrance canopies, adding a splash of colour and an added level of safety to the new installation. The Shade Sail was installed in Cherry Red, which complements the grassed area beautifully. What a bright and engaging space Bedfont Primary now have.

The benefits of playing outside on young children and why we need to encourage more children to do so

Multiple studies recognise that children’s outdoor play is pivotal for their healthy development and academic performance. This subject emphasises the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also emphasises the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The extensive interventions necessary to reduce parents’ worries require practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces. That is a huge goal that will take many years to complete. Though, there are ways that schools can intervene, to support children in attaining their essential repeated experience of high quality unstructured outdoor play opportunities, which will aid their development and academic performance.

Continue reading to find out why outdoor play is so crucial for child development, why it is declining and how schools can assist.

Learning outside the classroom is key and something that Ofsted are looking at in their evaluations. Bedfont Primary can now clearly demonstrate that they have facilities to undertake learning outdoors, whatever the weather! What a lovely space for the children to play, explore, socialise and learn.

“The canopies and wind shade look lovely. Thank you.”
