Aurora Hanley School in Stoke on Trent Add Covered Walkway

The pupils of Aurora Hanley School would often be exposed to the elements while moving between buildings. To improve the facilities, the school worked with A&S Landscape to add a canopy to cover the pathway.

Project Specification

  • Product: Motiva Linear™
  • Size: 21600mm X 1800/2400mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Slate Grey - RAL NO. 7015

  • Roof:
    • Clear

A long straight roof canopy was installed at the grounds, from the Motiva range of products. The school choose slate grey steelwork for the posts, which gives the shelter a sleek, modern appearance. The clear polycarbonate roofing allows sunlight through, while importantly protecting the ground from rain and snow.

The pupils and staff are overjoyed with their new covered walkway! Now moving around the campus is a much more pleasant experience, especially during the winter. If people are carrying books and paperwork, they know they will remain in the same condition and won’t get damaged by the weather. The shelter could also be used during break times if the students wish to spend time outdoors in poor conditions. We also installed a walkway canopy at St Giles C of E Primary School in Shropshire.

How schools can utilise shelters to combat their increasing pupil numbers to expand their facilities

As we know, the school-age population has been growing. The count of five to ten year old children in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) within 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the responsibility to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are lots of ways that this can be achieved. New schools are being constructed, free schools are being funded and current schools are being given capital funding to service, enhance and grow facilities. With funds being stretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build more classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a great deal of different uses.

Some uses of outdoor sheltered areas include:

• Additional dining areas

• All-weather sports pitches

• Outdoor classroom

• Cycle Storage

• Outdoor theatre
